Taking Care of your Cut Flower Arrangements:

To help keep your arrangement lasting longer, check the water level in the vase every other day and replenish frequently. Some flowers may start to go limp after a while, which means they are not drinking the water well. It is important to cut the stems of all the flowers every 2 days at least, to keep them from going limp. Just removing a small portion will give the stem a clean opening and allow it to take up more water. A general note is to cut above any browned ends.

When cutting the stems, be sure to use a proper pruner and cut the stem at an angle. Avoid using scissors as this can cause damage to the tiny vessels that transport the water from the bottom of the stem to the bloom. Using a sharp knife that will give you a clean cut is the best method!

Flowers need carbohydrates, biocides and acidifiers to survive. The carbohydrates are crucial for cell metabolism. Biocides protect against bacteria and maintain the plant’s health. Acidifiers adjust the pH of the water to increase water uptake. You can make a home-made preservative that include these ingredients to prolong your arrangement’s longevity. Adding aspirin to the water is said to keep flowers fresh due to the acid and carbohydrate in the drug.

Keep your floral arrangement away from any drafts, direct sunlight, and ripening fruits. These items emit a type of gas known as ethylene. It can cause the buds to remain closed, petals to have poor color, and flowers to have a shorter life span. Always remove the flowers that have wilted blooms as they are taking up valuable space and water.
