Our Story
A Farm Rooted in 1807
Barlow's story starts with a farmhouse built in 1807 in Sea Girt, New Jersey — a small coastal town about 60 miles south of New York City. For generations, the property served the local community, growing from a single retail greenhouse and a handful of small growing houses into something much bigger.
In 1983, Stephen and Leslie Barlow purchased the farm, and under their care, Barlow's grew into one of New Jersey's largest retail annual growers. At its peak, Barlow's was propagating up to 70% of what it sold, right on-site — a level of hands-on growing expertise that's stayed core to who we are ever since.
A New Chapter in Wall Township
After 42 years in Sea Girt, we closed that chapter in October 2025 to focus on what we've always done best: growing exceptional plants. In April 2026, we opened our doors on a 22-acre farm in Wall Township — our new home, and the site of our seasonal Garden Market and wholesale operations today.
What hasn't changed is the quality. The same growers, the same propagation know-how, the same commitment to plants that thrive in our local conditions — many of the varieties you'll find here were already being grown on this very farm and trucked to Sea Girt for years before we made it our full-time home.
What has changed is the model. By selling directly from the farm through a seasonal Garden Market, we've simplified things — less overhead, better value, and a closer connection between where your plants are grown and where they find a home.

Still a Family Farm
Stephen and Leslie have since retired, though you'll still spot them visiting the farm from time to time. Today, Stephen Barlow III owns and leads the farm, with his brother Thomas as head grower and sister Stephanie assisting with marketing and customer engagement. The fourth generation can often be found working the farm during school breaks and the busiest stretches of the season — the same way generations before them did.
About 90% of what we sell is grown right here on our 22-acre farm — the rest comes from a small group of trusted partner growers.
